3 Successful People You Didn’t Know Had A Change Of Career Later In Life

As an RTO, you have the chance to give people an opportunity to study towards a change of career.

Many of your students are looking at your RTO for a change in career. They want to study something that will get them further in life or a vocation that will provide more enjoyment and job satisfaction. It obviously can be scary to break from something they already know. They are looking for inspiration to to make the change.

For much of our lives we are pushed to choose a career path that we will stick to; one that’s respectable and makes us enough money to get the standard picket fence, house, car and 2.4 children. We are often so focused on the jobs that have been prescribed to us that we forget that there are other options out there for a change of career.

The truth is that there are millions of people of all ages – from their 20’s to their 60’s – that are unhappy and unfulfilled with their professions and who feel stuck. So, what can you do if you are desperately unhappy with your career?  Change it. It’s never too late.

Here are three examples of famous people who changed their careers later in life:

Walt Disney

The world famous founder of the Walt Disney Company once worked at the Kansas City Star newspaper. This is where he was infamously fired by the editor for “lacking imagination and no good ideas.”

Walt then set his sights on somewhere a lot more lucrative: Hollywood. I think we can all see that it was a huge success.

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman is one of Australia’s finest actors and is known for his roles as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise and in “Australia” alongside Nicole Kidman. However, Jackman wasn’t always a stud on screen, and in fact used to be a high school PE teacher at the UK’s Uppingham School.

Jackman says he “had a ball” and easily could’ve stuck it out, but he tried his hand at acting and hasn’t looked back since.

JK Rowling

Today we know Rowling as the multi-billionaire author of Harry Potter and the wonderful world of magic. However, she used to spend her days as a secretary at Amnesty International. It was at this desk job where she dreamed of her magical masterpiece and started to write about her thoughts.

Her employers eventually grew tired of her lack of interest and fired her. She then used her severance package to live off over the next couple of years while she completed her books. The rest as we say – is history.

As an RTO, you have the chance to give people an opportunity to study towards a change in career and you should always remember to give prospective students the information and inspiration they need to make the leap.
